Capacity Building

Capacity building is a two-way street

Capacity building within the construct of the Collaboratory is the process by which organizations improve their ability to produce, perform, engage and impact community science research.

The Collaboratory explores and employs best practices that build equitable, sustainable and trustworthy practices to develop and strengthen members ability to do effective community science research.

For academics and students...

Capacity-building for academics includes learning more about the expertise, capacities, and previous experiences of proposed community-based partners. It also involves self-assessments of personal and institutional capacities for equitable relationships.

These steps may involve developing meaningful relationships within the community, increasing knowledge and understanding of effective and authentic ways to engage in community, and developing standards and practices that communicate value to the community.

For community-based organizations...

Capacity-building for engaging in equitable research partnerships make take a variety of forms for CBOs. For community based organization partners, this may include resource development, undergirding administrative functions, learning about the research process and both the experience and constraints of prospective academic partners, and most importantly maintaining trust, commitment and service to the community.
